Courses leading to UKCC Swimming Teachers Courses
LEVEL 1
Prerequisites:
Individuals on the course must have 100% attendance.
Candidates must be at least 16 years of age at the start of the learning programme.
This qualification may enable you to secure paid or voluntary work as a support teacher and is the first stage in a three level coaching structure. Unit 1 is transferable across all the ASA disciplines.
It will provide you with the generic ‘’how to teach/coach skills’’ common to all disciplines together with specific focus on movement literacy. The second part of the course will focus on aquatic teaching including the technical knowledge and practical skills which will help you to actively support a more senior qualified / licensed aquatic teacher at any level, in the delivery of a pre-prepared session.
Assessment is by the course tutor/assessor and will cover:
- Practical coaching through the use of continuous checklist plus one formal 15 minute assessment.
- Theoretical knowledge through the use of a multi choice knowledge test.
- Planning, preparation and other associated tasks through the completion of a candidate log book.
- Courses leading to an ASA qualification are subject to an internal and external verification process.

LEVEL 2
Prerequisites:
Individuals on the course must have 100% attendance.
Candidates must be t least 17 years of age at the start of the learning programme.
You must also have one of the following certificates:
ASA LEVEL 1 certificate for teaching aquatics
ASA LEVEL1 certificate for teaching swimming post 2002
ASA assistant teacher certificate (swimming) post sept 1994
STA (Swimming Teachers Association) certificate post sept 1994
This course is ideal if you are interested in teaching within a learn to swim environment utilising the ASA National Plan for teaching swimming. This course will qualify you to operate as a teacher.
Assessment is by the course tutor/assessor and will cover:
- Practical coaching through the use of observation and oral checklist.
- Theoretical knowledge through the use of a written knowledge test.
- Planning preparation and other associated tasks through the completion of the appropriate Level 2 log book.
- Assessment of Unit 6 will cover practical coaching through the use of observation, oral and or written and recorded against a checklist of competence related to specific outcomes.
- Courses leading to an ASA qualification are subject to an internal and external verification progress.

RLSS POOL LIFEGUARD and BRONZE MEDALLION
Pool Lifeguard
Prerequisites:
- Be 16 years of age and above.
- Be able to meet the following basic fitness criteria:-
- jump / dive into deep water
- swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
- swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water
- tread water for 30 seconds
- surface dive to the floor of the pool
- climb out unaided without ladder / steps and
where the pool design permits
This course will prepare you to gain this qualification which will help to gain employment or voluntary work.
Lastly but still very importantly, you will gain a life skill that will come in handy for the rest of your life.

If you hold Lifesaving 3, Rookie Star Grade 4 level 4 or Assistant Beach Lifesaver Award, you can take your Bronze Medallion assessment when you are 12 years of age. If not you take your Bronze medallion at 13yrs of age.
