STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching

Who is it for?

Swimming teachers are able to seek employment in a wide variety of leisure facilities including private health clubs and school swimming pools through to large local authority leisure centres. As a swimming teacher, you would be responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating a series of progressive and fun swimming lessons teaching non-swimmer, beginner and improver participants. You will be able to teach a range of aquatic and safety skills such as floating, rotation, water confidence and swimming strokes. You would be responsible for ensuring the lesson area and appropriate equipment is safe and promoted good teaching and learning.

The STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming aims to produce teachers that can teach up to 12 non-swimmers through to improver participants and deliver the STAnley Series of awards up to the Octopus and Goldfish Series of STA’s International Learn to Swim Programme.

What will I learn?

The aim of this course to is develop your knowledge and skills to an advanced level to enable you to teach from the pool surround to groups, monitoring safety, teaching a variety of strokes and developing the skills of the pupils. You will also learn how to prepared & carry out short lessons.

  • Understanding the Health and Safety Requirements for an Aquatic Environment
  • Understanding the Scientific and Learning Theories Relevant to Swimming Teaching

Support & Delivery

All students recieve their learning materials of manuals, workbooks, and their student guide on day 1 of the course

Course Structure

5 days (Classroom and swimming pool based learning)

Assessment

The STA Award in Teaching Swimming is tutor assessed through the completion of worksheets, schemes of work, lesson plans, lesson evaluation forms and practical teaching. In addition to this, there is an external assessment of a 30-minute practical lesson on the final day of the course. On successful completion of the STA Award in Teaching Swimming learners will have completed and been assessed on:

  • Developing 2 x ten-week schemes of work, covering delivery too beginners and improvers participants
  • Developing 3 x lesson plans, covering non-swimmer, beginner and improver participants
  • Completing 3 x lesson evaluation forms
  • Delivering 2.5 hours of practical teaching with non-swimmer, beginner and improver participants, 30 minutes of which is externally assessed.

All learning outcomes and assessment criteria in the units must be achieved in order for the learner to be deemed competent and pass the qualification.

Students must be 16 or over
